What We Do For California Education Leaders

ELSF partners with district, county, and regional offices in adopting high-quality instructional materials to meet state standards and effectively support multilingual learners.

The Opportunity

For the first time in 10 years, school districts across California will be adopting new curriculum materials for mathematics – options for consideration will be released by the state in November. These materials will set the standard for mathematics instruction for years to come.

The Math Musts

District and education leaders face a complex process to ensure that instructional materials they adopt are responsive to the needs of all students, especially multilingual learners. That’s why we crafted  the Math Musts — an easy to use, research-based framework that outlines the three non-negotiable features instructional materials must include.

Outcomes

High-quality curriculum materials are one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to improve student outcomes. Intentionally working to ensure that the instructional materials contain the Math Must-Haves can support the need to make sure every student – to include multilingual students – gets the education they need, no matter what level they start at.

As the 3rd largest district in CA, we have a responsibility to lead the state in ensuring and demanding that when we are adopting curriculum we have clarity ourselves of what we expect in our curriculum…so that when we work with curriculum developers and curriculum companies we can express what those needs are.

It’s about weaving students’ thinking into instruction; giving students a voice. That’s what a high-quality curriculum does. Then, we need professional learning to support teachers in maximizing that curriculum. That’s what we did in this project and why we made so much progress.
