Sandra Baker

Math Specialist, MSD Pike Township

Sandy is married (17 years) and has one son who is ten years old. She currently serves as a Math Specialist for an urban school district in Indianapolis. She started her teaching career in 2004, working with 8th grade students, teaching general math and Algebra. After 7 years, she transitioned to a middle school math coach for middle and elementary school teachers. The district is very diverse with over 85 languages spoken by students and is considered a minority majority district. The math coach position allowed for time for learning more about how students learn, understanding the special needs of English Learners and other students from diverse backgrounds, and intentional time working with teachers. In 2013, she transitioned to her current position, working with all math teachers in grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade in order to improve math instruction and transition to the college and career ready standards. She is licensed to teach all levels of math, reading through grade 8, and English as a new language for all grade levels. In her spare time, Sandy tutors students of all ages and teaches prospective teachers how to understand and teach mathematics in the elementary grades. She is passionate for educating all students, but especially those students who are traditionally disadvantaged and marginalized.
