What makes curriculum truly high quality for multilingual learners? This recent episode of Literacy Across Languages features ELSF's Senior Advisor, Content, Renae Skarin discussing what high-quality instructional materials must include for multilingual learners to thrive. Language development cannot live in an add-on, a sidebar strategy, or a separate support block. It must be built into the DNA of the curriculum itself.

The episode discusses:

  • What it means to design curriculum where language and content grow together
  • How to use student language as real-time data for immediate feedback and support
  • Why high-quality instructional materials alone are not enough (and what else needs to be in place for multilingual learners' success)

Throughout the conversation, Renae helps us think beyond curriculum selection alone and toward the systems, planning, and collaboration that allow strong instruction to take root. Whether materials are teacher-created or school-selected, language development must be woven into the fabric of the curriculum itself, shaping how students use language to learn, engage, and build understanding.
