The field has increasingly recognized science learning as language-intensive, rich with opportunities for students to explain, argue, and model as they make sense of phenomena using language. Despite this recognition, attention to and support for language development does not always carry through into the materials themselves. In this session, you’ll learn about what research shows about how multilingual learners build scientific understanding, some common pitfalls when developing materials with multilingual learners in mind, and a concrete example of what it can look like when materials develop content and language as a single, connected process.

OBJECTIVES

  • Learn why science learning holds unique opportunities for language development
  • Identify common pitfalls and what it takes to move towards developing materials with multilingual learners in mind
  • Explore one concrete example of what research-backed language integration can look like across a science unit
  • Leave with questions worth asking about how your own science materials support language development

AUDIENCE

  • Chiefs and VPs of Product or Academics at publishers who set direction for science curricula
  • Content Developers, Editorial Directors, and Product Directors shaping the instructional design and content standards those materials are built on
