English Language Development (ELD) Guidelines

ELSF presents these Guidelines for Improving Designated English Language Development Materials (“Guidelines”) to inform the development of high-quality instructional materials intended for designated ELD instructional contexts. The Guidelines articulate key research-informed design features and fundamental aspects of language development that are the basis for improving designated ELD materials. They are organized into five areas of focus, sequenced intentionally to best support content developers.

II: Supports and Structures for Language Learning
III: Metalinguistic Awareness
IV: Students’ Assets and Home Languages
V. Assessment for Language and Literacy

Who Should Use These Guidelines?

The Guidelines that follow provide publishers guidance in the development of the development of high-quality instructional materials intended for designated ELD instructional contexts. ELSF believes these Guidelines will benefit those who play a role in ensuring teachers have access to curricular materials that are high-quality and consider the needs of all students. Audiences may include:

  • Content developers
  • Professional learning communities
  • Education leaders considering new curriculum
